MEET THE MONSTER MAKER: MARTIN, THE MOVER AND SHAKER

Monster Legends just hit the App Store, which means two things. For players it means fighting and breeding on the move. For Social Point, it means the culmination of months of really hard team work to make this happen. (Er… yes, for us it also means fighting and breeding on the move.)

Meet Martin Griffin. Martin wanted to make the transition from the AAA gaming industry to the young, innovative world of social gaming. In 2013 he traded London for Barcelona and joined our team as Project Manager for Monster Legends – a role he describes as “very different” to his previous life. It’s Martin’s job to manage the various Monster teams behind our game, and help deliver it for mobile. We asked him what it’s like to make monsters on the go. Here’s what he told us.

Martin, “very different”? Good thing, bad thing? 

Good thing, definitely. Social Point is one of very few companies willing and actively trying to make unique social gaming experiences. It’s not about cookie cutter clones of successes, and every game has to be different and has to bring something new to the table.It’s still a very young, growing space and isn’t constrained by the kind of norms that stifle other types of games development. There is more opportunity to try out new stuff,  because we can develop and test quickly. You don’t have to wait till the end of an AAA development cycle to pitch a new idea.

What do you most enjoy about producing Monster Legends

My team.  I get to work with some seriously talented people.  We move fast, adapt quickly to any changes in the project and all of us always have a smile on our faces.  We’re a real band of brothers.

Why was it so important to bring out ML for iOS?app store

Having Monster Legends available on iOS is the first step to putting our game in the pockets of  all of our players.  There’s a difference between asking users to ‘come to us’ on Facebook – which requires a desktop computer – and a gentle reminder to play through notification in their pocket.  It’s about accessibility and deepening engagement between players and our games, wherever they are, whatever they are doing.

What’s your fave part of gameplay?

Monster Legends is all about the Battles.  Hands down.  We have player vs player, a single player campaign and special challenges for player to engage with. The battle is on, whichever way you want to dice it.

Fave Monster?

It has to be the Worker Hulk.  Best.  Monster. Ever.

How do you get to be a game producer -any tips for anyone interested in getting into this kind of role?

First of all, you need to love to play games.  All kinds of games.  A producer’s job is not one for the ‘specialist’ type person.  Sometimes you will work on things which are not your idea of ‘fun’ – but, to succeed in this industry you need to be good at getting to the details of any project you are working on.  You also have to answer a LOT of questions and attend a lot of different people every day.  Basically – if you are a ‘people person’ who loves to keep busy then a Producer role is for you.  If you’re a quiet type who doesn’t like interruptions or change then maybe you should think about another job.
